Lap Steels
We have been havng a lot of fun with the Spanky Banjo Ukes and the reaction from you players has been fantastic. Dan has been inspired to build some fine instruments for a related fun niche - Non pedal lap steels. We started off as usual talking to as many players as we could to find out what they look for in a great instrument. Armed with that information, Dan has been working on some prototypes.
The first instrument off the bench is a six string made from birdseye maple. It has Fender type through body string attachment with a .409 spread. The fret markers are inlayed walnut except for the 12th and 24th frets which are BWB for quick recognition. We are using Grover machines and our own custom hand wound Humbucker at 8.5K. (not too hot, not too cool but just right)

Controls feature a volume and DPDT switch for series, parallel, or coil cut. Our first change will be to replace that switch with a blend pot.
Easy access to the electronics through a removable back panel.
Currently on the development bench is an eight string.
We are starting from the ground up with the pickups. These are hand made and wound in Dan's magic shop using fiberglass circuit board material and hand cast colorful upper flatwork plus eight pole Alnico 5 magnets. This unique machine allow us to lay down the wire consistently for nearly any type coil (pickups relays etc).
